DRAG ME TO HELL

RATING:

For all the Sam Raimi fans praying for a fourth Evil Dead film, this may be as close as you're going to get. Drag Me to Hell is trippy, scary and downright weird. There are many scenes where you won't be sure whether to jump or laugh your head off.

As the movie played, couldn't help but try to picture Ellen Page speaking the dialogue every now and then. She was reportedly the first choice for the main role of Christine Brown. Each time I did though, found myself glad Alison Lohman was in the lead. She nails the adorable and innocent routine, but still manages to convince you when her character takes a turn. Just when you write her off as a cinematic treat, just waiting to be devoured by the demonic unholy, the chick surprises you by showing she actually has a pair.

It's almost as if Raimi glanced at a blueprint of what "this kind of movie" is supposed to be and said, "Trust me, guys. I'll take it from here." He really is a masterful filmmaker, and it's great to see him make such a balls-to-the-wall horror picture after directing, not one, but 3 Spider-Mans. The very definition of popcorn mainstream.

Not necessarily a complaint, but that's my one curiosity about Drag Me to Hell. What kind of movie would this have been had Raimi never gone through the Hollywood machine and actually made this independently? Remember, this is a man who once brought us a scene of a woman being pseudo-raped by a tree. Can't help but think of the no holds barred insanity this could have been. Again, though. Just thinking out loud. Drag Me to Hell is one of the most fun experiences I've had in a theater in a very long time. Perfect in its imperfections. The kind of movie that reminds you why you love movies in the first place.
